RCD Testing Melbourne & Safety Switch Testing
Professional RCD testing for Melbourne workplaces, with clearly scoped testing, coordinated circuit shutdowns, recorded results and practical follow-up when a device fails.
Testing scope, frequency and personnel requirements depend on the device, workplace environment and applicable electrical-safety requirements.
RCD Testing Is Different From Appliance Test & Tag
A test-and-tag inspection focuses on electrical equipment such as leads, tools, computers and appliances. An RCD (Residual Current Device), often called a safety switch, monitors current imbalance and is designed to disconnect supply when leakage current is detected.
Circuit breakers and RCDs perform different safety functions. Circuit breakers primarily protect circuits from overcurrent and short-circuit conditions, while RCDs are designed to reduce the risk of electric shock from earth-leakage faults.
What Our RCD Testing Service Can Include
We define the testing scope before the visit so your site knows what will be tested, what may require a brief power interruption and what records will be provided.
Portable RCDs
Portable RCD units commonly used with tools, temporary power arrangements and higher-risk work environments can be included in the testing scope.
Fixed / Switchboard RCDs
Fixed RCDs and safety switches can be tested where they are included in the agreed scope and the work is carried out by appropriately competent or licensed personnel where required.
Operating-Time Testing
Where applicable, a suitable calibrated RCD tester is used to verify operating performance and record the result for the device tested.
Result Recording
Results are documented for the agreed scope, with failed devices or concerns clearly identified for follow-up.
RCD Testing for Melbourne Workplaces
We focus on commercial and workplace environments where clear scheduling, records and minimal unnecessary disruption matter.
What You Receive After Testing
Results for the RCDs included in the agreed scope.
Clear records so tested devices can be matched to their location or identifier.
Devices that fail or raise concerns are identified for appropriate follow-up.
Testing information provided in a practical digital format for your records.
Our RCD Testing Process
Confirm the Scope
Tell us your site type, approximate number of RCDs, operating hours, access requirements and whether testing is being combined with other services.
Plan Circuit Interruptions
RCD operating tests cause the protected circuit to trip. We coordinate the sequence with your site contact so equipment can be shut down appropriately.
Inspect & Test
The agreed RCDs are inspected and tested using the appropriate method and test equipment for the scope.
Record Results
Results are documented so your team has a usable record of what was tested and the outcome.
Flag Follow-Up
Failed RCDs or electrical concerns are clearly reported. Repair or replacement work that is electrical installation work must be completed by an appropriately licensed electrical worker.
How Often Should RCDs Be Tested?
There is no single interval that should be copied across every RCD in every workplace. The appropriate inspection and testing schedule depends on factors including whether the RCD is portable or fixed, the workplace risk level, the way it is used and the applicable standard or site requirements.
WorkSafe Victoria's current electrical-safety guidance explains that inspection and testing frequency depends on the equipment, operating environment and use. Construction and other higher-risk environments may have different requirements from a typical office or retail site.
Combine RCD Testing With Other Workplace Testing
Where the services and site schedule align, combining related testing into one planned visit can reduce administration and make record handover easier for facility managers, safety teams and business owners.
What Affects RCD Testing Cost?
Rather than publishing a generic price that may not match your site, we quote according to the actual scope. Common pricing factors include:
- Number and type of RCDs to be tested
- Portable versus fixed devices
- Number of switchboards or site areas
- Access and shutdown coordination
- Operating-hours or after-hours requirements
- Single-site versus multi-site scheduling
- Reporting and asset-record requirements
- Whether RCD testing is combined with other services
Tell us your site, suburb and approximate number of RCDs.
RCD Testing FAQs
Will RCD testing interrupt the power?
An operating test causes the RCD to trip, so the circuit it protects will be interrupted during the test. We recommend identifying sensitive equipment and coordinating shutdowns with your site contact before testing begins.
Can staff just press the RCD test button?
A push-button check can form part of an RCD maintenance programme, but it is not the same as an instrumented operating test. The appropriate test type, frequency and person performing it depend on the device and workplace requirements.
Do portable RCDs need testing too?
Portable RCDs may also require inspection and testing. Their schedule can differ from fixed RCDs, particularly in construction or other higher-risk environments.
What happens if an RCD fails?
The failed result should be recorded and the risk managed promptly. Electrical repair, replacement or installation work must be carried out by appropriately licensed personnel where required.
How often should my workplace RCDs be tested?
It depends on the RCD type, environment, use and applicable requirements. We do not recommend applying one universal interval to every workplace. See our testing frequency guide or ask us to help define the appropriate testing scope.
Can RCD testing be combined with test and tag?
Yes, where both services are within the agreed scope and scheduling allows it. Combining services can simplify site access, coordination and record handover.
